P15-Saint Thomas, Canterbury

While some pilgrim badges were rather crudely made, others, such as this example, showed a high standard of workmanship. The sword with which Becket was martyred was kept as a major relic at Canterbury Cathedral and in this badge it is represented along with a buckler or shield. The original of this badge originally had a coloured backing to highlight the design. Our copy is available with either red, blue or green cloth backing.*

Original found in Salisbury.

Late 14th-early 15th centuries.

47x78mm Sword overlain by a shield surrounded by a decorative border.
